Hooterville in the 60's

Come and listen to a story bout a man named Oliver. Left New York , bought a farm in Hooterville. On the first day, he stayed at the Shady Rest. Lisa told Kate she wanted to go away.

The “rural comedies” of CBS hit the airwaves in the 1960’s. Beverly Hillbillies in 1962. Petticoat Junction in 1963 and Green Acres in 1965. Created by Paul Henning, these rural comedies quickly became beloved. The latter 2 are based in the fictional town of Hooterville. Be sure to get your map and your magnifying glass to find it. Hillbillies packed up and moved to Beverly. Petticoat Junction & Green Acres had cast crossovers & the Hillbillies existed in their own tv universe.. One of the funniest moments of Green Acres, residents put on a show to raise money and they decide on the Beverly Hillbillies, with Oliver as Jethro, Lisa as Granny and Hank Kimball as Jed. Same as no one noticed that Roy Cushing and Norman P. Curtis wasn't the same person.

It was the seventh season of the Beverly Hillbillies , after the Clampetts return from London, that wall comes crashing down. Granny gets a letter from Cousin Pearl that she’s needed in Hooterville to help with the baby. She tells Jed she’ll be at the Shady Rest hotel, which was run by Kate Bradley. Now, with Bea Benaderet playing both characters, I can see how they might have been able to talk to one another. Unfortunately, when this episode aired Ms Benederet had passed.

I’d have always wanted to see the producers play with the similarity some. Cousin Pearl did return for a brief cameo while Petticoat Junction was on the air, so it could have been done. The 1970’s brought change. Not only in television, but life in general. The shows were all unceremoniously canceled in the “Rural Purge” . There were a few tv movies made to bring back some memories - but those were poorly written. There wasn’t a proper resolution to allow the characters to move along & wrap up storylines.

I’ve given it some thought as to what one of the movies *could* have been. The Hillbillies finally tire of life in Beverly and move to Hooterville. Drysdale trying to get them to stay…….

Ah, but first- how would *you* have liked to see these shows end? What was your favorite character or show? Let me know in the comments below….
