A few months ago, "Law & Order: SVU" fans were delighted to find out that there would be another series tied to the extremely popular Dick Wolf franchise. "Law & Order: Organized Crime" would be led by Chris Meloni, who starred on SVU for 12 seasons alongside the talented Mariska Hargitay (she is still on the series, which was renewed for three additional seasons earlier this year).
Meloni's Stabler decided to retire from law enforcement way back in 2011 after a shootout in the squad room killed a criminal. His partner Benson (and fans alike) did not get a proper good-bye to this character they had grown to love. Stabler will return to the season premier of SVU to introduce the new series.
Salary negotiations were claimed to be the main reason of Meloni's departure from the series and nothing to do with the cast and crew. "I left with zero animosity, but I did leave clearly and open eyed in going forward and finding new adventures," claimed Meloni. And new adventures he did find. Meloni has starred in several projects since exiting the series including "True Blood", "The Handmaid's Tale", and "Veep".
Stabler is returning to the world of fighting crime "after a devastating personal loss." Fans have speculated this means that Stabler's wife has passed away. Will this mean a love reunion for the two former partners? Meloni admitted, "Benson and Stabler are inextricably linked, locked, and connected. I think there is truly and deeply a worthwhile, inherent drama in exploring that relationship - the unresolved emotions both characters feel."
There is not set premiere date for either "Law & Order: SVU" or "Law & Order: Organized Crime" due to the current pandemic. Hopefully, we will get to see Meloni as Stabler as soon as possible.
